Music legend Dionne Warwick’s affiliation with The HistoryMakers began in 2001 when she was honored by The HistoryMakers in An Evening With Dionne Warwick. She and the late Diahann Carroll travelled to Chicago just two months after the events of 911 rocked the United States. Warwick, whose historic musical family is legendary, is also a history buff and over the course of 20 years, she has helped The HistoryMakers in the celebrations of its 10th anniversary as well as in 2014 when the Library of Congress became its permanent repository. In 2001, 82 interviews from Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and New York were added to The HistoryMakers archives. The HistoryMakers public presence grew with a groundbreaking project called Pioneers in the Struggle: The History of African Americans in the Illinois General Assembly (1877-2001) funded by the State of Illinois through the assistance of State Senate President Emil Jones, Jr. The year also included public programs Three Arts, Three Lives and Three Stories that honored photographer Dawoud Bey, sculptor Richard Hunt and painter Allen Stringfellow; Black and Red: The Little-Known History of African Americans and Native American Heritage and 2001 Salute to HistoryMakers. In addition to behind-the-scenes footage and clips from The HistoryMakers archives, this evening program features a special tribute performance for Dionne Warwick and those HistoryMakers honored in 2001 by Grammy Award-winner, Lisa Fischer, courtesy of the Carr Center. Immediately following will be an airing of An Evening With Dionne Warwick.

Dionne Warwick is an American singer, actress, and TV-show host. She was born into a gospel music family. She first sang when she was six years old at New hope Baptist Church in New Jersey where eventually she became a choir member. When she became a teenager, she formed a group with her sister Dee Dee and her aunt Cissy Houston called theGospelaires. After high school, she became a scholar at the Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. While she was performing as a background singer of the song “Mexican Divorce,” the song composer, Burt Bacharach, and the lyricist, Hal David, noticed her voice.After the performance, the composer asked Dionne if she would be interested in recording demo recordings of his compositions. And the rest is history.
Lisa Fischer: Performer
Raised in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn, Grammy Award-winner Lisa Fischer sang for two decades with legendary vocalist Luther Vandross, and released “So Intense”, earning her first Best R&B Performance Grammy with “How Can I Ease The Pain”. She joined the Rolling Stones for their 1989 Steel Wheels tour, and continued to grace their stage for the next 26 years. Lisa’s passion for constant growth and experimentation with different styles invited recent collaborations with jazz pianist Taylor Eigsti, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Michael McDonald, Eric Krasno, Talib Kweli, Billy Childs and YoYo Ma, the BBC Proms / Jules Buckley and the Metropole Orkest, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Anna Deavere Smith’s “Notes from the Field” for HBO, and especially her full evening program The Classic Lisa Fischer with Grand Baton and Seattle Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony and the National Philharmonic.

This one hour one-on-one interview program provided a rare look into the life and times of Dionne Warwick. Taped in Chicago in front of a live audience, singer Warwick was interviewed by her friend, actress and entertainer, Diahann Carroll. Warwick is one of the most celebrated vocal artists of the past fifty years. With more than fifty hit singles and twenty albums, the artist that bridged the gap climbed to the top of the charts more than any other female entertainer during this time. Throughout her illustrious career, Warwick has combined her exceptional talents as a singer with a deep personal commitment to social activism. Her humanitarian efforts to further AIDS research and education have earned Warwick the respect of millions around the world. An Evening With Dionne Warwick provided an inside look into and explored the wonderfully unique life of Dionne Warwick. Using clips of performances and newsreel footage, An Evening with Dionne Warwick told the story of this living legend.
