Biography

Attorney Kim Foxx was born on April 9, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois to Gennell Wilson and Miller Anderson. She graduated from Lincoln Park High School in Chicago in 1990. She earned her B.A. degree in political science in 1994 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. She went on to earn her J.D. degree from Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School in 1997.

Foxx began her law career in 1998 when she was hired as an assistant public guardian for the Cook County Public Guardian System. In 2001, Foxx served as an assistant state’s attorney for the Juvenile Justice Bureau (Child Protection), where she worked for four years. In 2005, she served as an assistant state’s attorney in the Juvenile Justice Division. While working for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Foxx was hired as a faculty instructor at the National College of District Attorneys, and she also assumed the role of assistant state’s attorney in the preliminary hearings, felony review, and sex crimes division in 2007. Foxx was hired as the deputy chief of staff to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle in 2013, later serving as chief of staff until 2015. Foxx left the Office of the Cook County Board President to run for state’s attorney. She secured the Democratic nomination and was elected Cook County State’s Attorney in 2016. Foxx announced her plan to run for reelection in 2019 and was subsequently reelected in 2020. She resigned in 2024.

Foxx served as the president of the board of directors of Planned Parenthood of Illinois from 2014 to 2015. She also served as a member of the boards of the Alphawood Foundation, Chicago Council of Lawyers, Get In Chicago, Free Spirit Media, and the Leadership Fellows Association. She was a member of the board of trustees of Adler University from 2015 to 2023. Foxx is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated.

Foxx has received numerous awards and honors, including being named a Leadership Greater Chicago Fellow in 2009, a Diversity Leadership Fellow by the Illinois State Bar Association in 2010, and an Edgar Fellow in 2014. She was also awarded the Chicago Appleseed Fund for Justice Commitment to Justice Award in 2012 and the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award from EMILY's List in 2018.

Foxx has two children, Kai and Kendall Foxx. She resides in Flossmoor, Illinois.
