Biography

Magazine beauty editor Marielle Bobo was born on August 4, 1978 in Brooklyn, New York to Sheilah and Jean-Claude Bobo. She earned her B.A. degree in journalism from Howard University in Washington D.C. in 2000. She went on to receive her B.A. degree in fashion merchandising from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, New York in 2001.

Bobo joined Wilhemina Models as an agent in 2000. The following year, she was hired by Allure magazine as an associate fashion market editor. After nearly four years with Allure magazine, she worked as the accessories editor of CosmoGIRL! at Cosmopolitan magazine in 2005. She then served as an accessories market editor with Women’s Wear Daily in 2006. From 2007 to 2010, Bobo was a contributing market editor and contributing accessories editor with Vanity Fair, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, Self, Us Weekly, and OK! magazines. Bobo went on to serve as the senior fashion editor for Essence in 2010; and in 2011, she became the fashion and beauty editor of Ebony magazine, where she worked until 2017. In 2008, she was the executive director of style and creative partnerships at Interactive One, a digital media platform launched by Urban One, Inc., formerly Radio One.

Bobo returned to Essence magazine in 2019, where she worked as the fashion director. That same year, she launched BoboHaus, LLC, a fashion and beauty consultancy and production firm. Bobo also worked as the founding editorial director of Ayesha Curry Brands, the lifestyle group of Ayesha Curry, as well as her magazine, Sweet July. In 2021, Bobo returned to EBONY Media as the editor-in-chief and senior vice president of programming, and she oversaw the magazine’s digital cover experience and return to print. In 2024, Bobo served as a programming and editorial consultant for The Costume Institute, a collection of accessories and costumes dating back to the fifteenth century, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, New York. That same year, she became the vice president of content at Shoptalk, a retail-focused media company.

Bobo served on the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), the Fashion Institute of Technology alumni advisory council, and the advisory board of RAISEfashion, a non-profit organization that supports underrepresented designers and members of the fashion community. She became a member of the Women’s Media Group in 2024.

Throughout her career, Bobo has received numerous awards and honors including on Hello Beautiful’s “30 Most Powerful Black Women in Fashion” list and a recognition as one of “150 Caribbean Boss Ladies” from Carib Biz Network in 2024.
